Diljit Dosanjh’s Punjab ’95 had been looking forward to its much-awaited release in India for long. Basing the story on activist Jaswant Singh Khalra’s life and death, this film was meant to be released globally on February 7.
But now, its release has been postponed. On Monday, Diljit, along with other actors, announced that the film won’t hit the screens on schedule.
Late Monday night, Diljit gave this information by writing a note on Instagram Stories. The singer wrote, ‘We are sorry and we are sad to inform you that due to circumstances beyond our control, the film Punjab ’95 will not release on February 7.’ Along with this, he also shared a picture of the late Khalra in another of his stories, on which a quote of his was written. Written on this picture was ‘I pray to the Guru who recognizes the truth to keep this flame burning’.
Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwwala, Punjab ’95 starred Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky, Varun Badola, and Geetika Vidya Ohlan. The film, which was submitted to the CBFC for certification, has been mired in controversy for nearly three years.
Title change and 120 cuts
In 2022, Punjab ’95, then titled Ghalughra after the Ghalughra massacre, was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification. However, the CBFC canceled the film 120 times and objected to the title. Finally, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parabandhaka Committee (SGPC), the apex Sikh religious body, intervened, and the CBFC was soft on the cuts but still requested to change the title Eventually, the film was renamed Punjab ’95. The trailer of the film was launched on YouTube the same year but was taken down just a day later.
