Tesla Inc. is making a definitive push into the Indian market, announcing 13 job vacancies after CEO Elon Musk’s strategic meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The move indicates Tesla’s resolve to establish itself in a country that is ready for an electric vehicle (EV) revolution.
Tesla’s Recruitment Drive: What Jobs Are Available?
The EV giant has posted a string of jobs on its LinkedIn page, most of which are based in Mumbai and Delhi. Of these, five jobs are for service technicians and advisory specialists, highlighting the importance of having a strong technical and customer support system. The other eight jobs, including customer engagement managers and delivery operations specialists, are based in Mumbai, further demonstrating Tesla’s focus on providing a smooth consumer experience.
A Pivotal Meeting: PM Modi and Elon Musk
On February 13, Prime Minister Modi and Elon Musk convened for a high-stakes discussion, coinciding with Modi’s inaugural official visit to the United States following the election of President Donald Trump. Musk, now a prominent figure in the Trump administration, wields considerable influence through his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
After the discussion, Modi went on X (formerly Twitter) to comment on their conversation, saying, “Our discussion ranged across several areas, including space, mobility, technological innovation, and innovation—areas of deep interest to Elon. I also presented India’s strategic reforms for creating a governance model based on ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance.'”
Tesla’s India Odyssey: A Journey of Hurdles and Prospects
Tesla’s plans in India have been on the back foot year after year, mainly bogged down by the country’s high import duties. In a significant policy initiative, India has reduced the BCD on luxury sedans by over 40,000 U.S. dollars from the stratospheric level of 110% to a more reasonable 70%, thereby giving investors the impression that it is indeed becoming an investment-friendly environment.
Elon Musk’s scheduled visit to India in May 2024 was abruptly, as he put it, called off, due to “heavy obligations” with much promise to return to India, which has not materialized.
Though still a novice compared to China’s massive EV industry, India offers a promising platform for Tesla to balance out its recent failures in the market. As China recorded a whopping 11 million EV sales in the previous year, India’s electric vehicle market, although relatively small, is quickly gaining pace, clocking almost 100,000 units in sales. This rising growth pattern makes India a priority market in Tesla’s international expansion strategy.
Tesla’s recruitment drive is a strategic step towards creating a strong presence in India, which fits into the country’s larger vision of sustainable mobility and technological advancement.
