Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairman Tarique Rahman will be sworn in as the country’s Prime Minister on Tuesday.
The BNP won a landslide victory with a two-thirds majority in last week’s elections. Speaker Om Birla from India will attend the ceremony.
Dhaka: Tarique Rahman, who led his party to a landslide victory in the general elections held on February 12 in Bangladesh, will be sworn in as the country’s next PrimeMinister on Tuesday, February 17. This marks the return of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to power in the country after two decades.
Breaking a long-standing tradition, 60-year-old Rahman will be sworn in at the South Plaza of the Bangladesh Parliament.

Previously, the Prime Minister and ministers were sworn in at the Durbar Hall of the President’s residence, Bangabhaban. Bangladesh’s state news agency, BSS, reported that President Mohammad Shahabuddin will swear in the new cabinet on Tuesday afternoon at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament).
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by Tarique Rahman, secured a two-thirds majority by winning 209 out of 297 seats.
Meanwhile, the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) won 68 seats in the elections, becoming the second-largest party. This is Jamaat-e-Islami’s best performance in the country since Bangladesh’s independence.
Previously, the party had won a maximum of 18 seats. This time, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League was barred from contesting the elections.
Lok Sabha Speaker from India to Attend
Bangladesh had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend Tarique Rahman’s swearing-in ceremony. PM Modi will not attend the ceremony. The Lok Sabha Speaker will lead India’s side in the swearing-in ceremony. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the Speaker’s participation in this important event underscores the deep and enduring friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh.

BNP Parliamentary Party Meeting
The BNP has called a party meeting at 11:30 am in Parliament House to elect the parliamentary party leader. BNP Standing Committee member Salah Uddin said, “As the leader of the party that wins the majority, our party chairman Tarique Rahman will be the Prime Minister.”
Tarique Rahman has indicated his intention to maintain good relations with opposition parties. Following the party’s landslide victory, Rahman visited the homes of his political opponents, including Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman and National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam.

Relations with India under BNP rule?
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has vowed to maintain good relations with India. The party has even stated that Sheikh Hasina’s presence in India will not hinder relations with New Delhi.
Speaking to The Hindu, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam said his party believes Sheikh Hasina should be extradited to Bangladesh, but even if that doesn’t happen, it won’t hinder the development of broader ties, including trade and commercial ties.
“We want even better relations,” he said. Relations between the two countries should not be “hostage” to one issue.
