Early life
Sunita Lynn Pandya Williams was born on 19 September 1965 in Euclid City (located in Cleveland) in the state of Ohio, USA. After completing high school in Massachusetts, he received a BS in Physical Sciences from the United States Naval Academy in 1987. Subsequently, in 1995, he completed his M.S. in Engineering Management from the Florida Institute of Technology. Earned the degree of. His father Dr. Deepak N. Pandya is a renowned neuroscientist who hails from the Indian state of Gujarat.
Her mother Bonnie Jalokar Pandya is from Slovenia. She has an elder brother, Jai Thomas Pandya, and an elder sister, Diana Ann, Pandya. When she was less than a year old, her father came to Boston, America from Ahmedabad in 1958. Although the children were not very happy leaving their grandparents, numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins, the family encouraged Father Deepak in his medical profession.
Sunita declared that she was a great believer in the Hindu god Ganesha and when she went to space, she also took the Hindu religious text Bhagavad Gita with her. In 1987, Sunita Williams received a commission in the US Army. After a temporary appointment of about 6 months, he was given the post of ‘Basic Diving Officer’. After this, she took training in the ‘Helicopter Combat Support Squadron’ and was posted in many foreign places. She operated in the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Persian Gulf during ‘Operation Desert Shield’ and ‘Operation Provide Comfort’.
In September 1992, he was made the officer-in-charge of the H-46 detachment and sent to Miami (Florida). This contingent was sent for relief work related to Hurricane Andrew. Sunita Williams was selected by NASA in June 1998 and her training started at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in August 1998. Their training included a variety of technical briefings and tours, briefings on various scientific and technical systems, exposure to the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station, psychological training, and training with the T-38 aircraft. Apart from this, he was also trained underwater and in isolation situations.
