An agitated Sonu Nigam has recently expressed his disappointment over the continuing omission of popular playback singers such as Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Alka Yagnik from the Padma Awards while lamenting the absence of the great Kishore Kumar from the honors list. The 2025 Padma Awards, unveiled on Republic Day, featured 139 recipients, with Arijit Singh among the distinguished names. However, the omission of several seasoned artists did not go unnoticed.
An Overdue Recognition
Taking to Instagram, Sonu Nigam shared his exasperation, underlining the significant contributions of these vocalists. His post, aptly captioned, “India and Its Pending Padma Awardees,” underscored the sentiment of neglect that lingers around these iconic voices.
In his video message, Nigam emphasized that the careers of these artists have been nothing short of illustrious, yet their recognition remains elusive.
“Call for lyricist pop opinions on just some other luminaries less recognized among their many peers. Their name names- Alka Yagnik ji, a real superstar with veritable treasures of musical history spanning decades, remains unappreciated. Shreya Ghoshal is another name whose quality of performance generations have praised while she continues to hold the audiences captive. Sunidhi Chauhan; her particular voice has changed the way an entire generation perceives music; no one recognizes her with honors.”
Kishore Kumar: A Giant Unhonored
Nigam further expressed his consternation over the fact that the legendary Kishore Kumar has not been conferred a Padma Award. He pointed out that the 2025 awards list features multiple posthumous honorees, suggesting that a similar gesture could have been extended to Kishore Kumar.
“Two singers have left an indelible mark on the global music landscape. One, Mohammad Rafi Sahab, has been confined to a Padma Shri, while the other, Kishore Kumar ji, remains entirely overlooked. If posthumous awards are being granted, why has he been denied?”
Posthumous Recognitions in 2025
This year, 13 individuals are being honored posthumously, including ‘Bihar Kokila’ Sharda Sinha and esteemed Malayalam writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair in the Art and Literature category. The continued neglect of Kishore Kumar in such an esteemed lineup remains a glaring omission, raising questions about the criteria governing these selections.
As the discourse around artistic recognition grows louder, Sonu Nigam’s candid remarks have reignited conversations about honoring India’s musical legends with the accolades they so rightfully deserve.
