A horrific tragedy is reported to have occurred in a Pune-based BPO firm as a young girl fell prey to a brutal attack with a cleaver by another colleague.
Several eyewitnesses claimed to have watched the gruesome occurrence at Yerawada, refusing to intervene.
The victim, Shubhada Kodare, 28, died from her injuries after being assaulted. Her attacker has been identified as Krishna Kanoja, a 30-year-old accountant at WNS Global, who attacked the woman over a “protracted” financial dispute. According to preliminary police reports, Kodare had borrowed money from Kanoja under the pretext of her father’s ill health. However, when Kanoja visited her native place to verify her claims, he discovered that her father was in good health and her story had been fabricated.
On Tuesday evening around 6 p.m., Kanoja summoned Kodare to the company parking lot to confront her and demand repayment. An argument ensued, during which Kanoja assaulted her with the cleaver. Alarmingly, while the altercation and subsequent attack unfolded, bystanders observed the incident but refrained from stepping in. Disturbingly, some even filmed the act rather than attempting to prevent it.
It was only after the accused discarded the weapon and Kodare collapsed on the ground that the crowd acted, overpowering and beating Kanoja. Kodare, gravely injured, was transported to a hospital but was declared dead by 9 p.m. that evening. A severe injury to her elbow proved fatal, according to medical reports. Kanoja has since been apprehended, and a case has been registered, police officials confirmed.
Deputy CM Criticizes Police Action
Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar has condemned in Harsh words the way Pune police have been going about rising criminal activities in the city. He indicated structural inefficiencies in the system that point to the senior officials failing in their duties. Speaking about Pune’s recent surge in violent incidents, particularly those involving so-called “koyta” gangs—named for their use of machete-like weapons—Pawar remarked, “The Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis have acknowledged these developments with serious concern. As a representative of this area, I too am deeply troubled.”
Pawar emphasized that the police have been provided with robust resources, including infrastructure, manpower, and housing, to combat crime effectively. Yet, their inability to address the surge in violent incidents reflects a deficiency in leadership. “If senior officers find themselves incapable of curbing these crimes, they must admit it, and we will replace them with officers better equipped to handle such challenges,” he asserted.
The grim episode has amplified public scrutiny of bystander apathy and reignited debates on the efficiency of local law enforcement in Pune.
