Modi is likely to be sworn in for a third consecutive term on Saturday, 8 June following the Lok Sabha elections that yielded a resounding majority for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The inauguration ceremony of the Union cabinet is also likely to take place on the same day.
The Union Cabinet met at the Prime Minister’s residence on Wednesday morning, a day after the election results were announced. According to sources, he recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha.
The meeting began at 11.30 am and was followed by a meeting of the Council of Ministers, the sources added. This was the final meeting of the Council of Ministers and the Modi 2.0 Cabinet. The government’s recommendation to dissolve the current Lok Sabha paves the way for the 18th Lok Sabha. The current 17th Lok Sabha’s tenure expires on June 16.
The cabinet meeting also assessed the results of the Lok Sabha elections and, according to sources, issues related to the formation of the next government were also discussed.
The BJP will form the government with the help of its allies after it failed to secure the required majority to win 240 seats. The NDA, on the other hand, got 293 seats in the 543-member parliament. The main opposition party Congress got 99 seats and the INDIAN bloc got a total of 233 seats.
