PM Modi Encourages BJP to Boost Women Membership in Preparation for Women’s Reservation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to focus on recruiting more women members to develop future leaders, aligning with the upcoming implementation of women’s reservation. This appeal came as Mr. Modi launched the BJP’s membership drive, the starting point for the party’s internal election process, where he was the first to renew his membership.
Expanding Party Base Among Women and Youth
During the launch event, Modi emphasized the importance of reaching out to women, youth, and regions where the BJP has historically been underrepresented, to broaden the party’s support base. He highlighted that this membership campaign is happening in the same “kaal khand” or era when the 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies is expected to be enforced.
“In this membership campaign, can we bring in individuals who will support our efforts to have the highest possible number of women elected as MLAs and MPs, ensuring the success of this critical decision? Referring to the 33% reservation for women, Modi questioned.
Historical Context and Future Implementation
The previous NDA government had passed the Women’s Reservation Bill, officially known as the Constitution (106th) Amendment Act, 2023, during a special session in the new Parliament House. However, the actual implementation of this Act will only occur after the national census and the redrawing of constituency boundaries are completed. In anticipation of this, Modi called on BJP leaders and workers to use the membership drive as an opportunity to strengthen women’s leadership capabilities within the party. Every six years, the BJP holds a membership drive during which time it renews current members and welcomes new ones.
Beyond Numbers: A Movement of Ideals
“This membership drive is not merely a formality. It is about growing our family, Modi emphasized, emphasizing that this is an ideological and sentimental campaign rather than a math exercise. He reminded BJP leaders of the party’s unique tradition of internal democracy and its strong organizational framework, which sets it apart from other political parties in India.
Additionally, Modi encouraged BJP members to focus on establishing a strong presence in border villages. Senior party leaders, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Health Minister and BJP President J.P. Nadda, also addressed the event.
Membership Drive Schedule
The membership drive will be rolled out in two phases: from September 2 to September 25 and from October 1 to October 15. Each phase will target specific objectives, ensuring extensive coverage and engagement across the country.
