India is mourning the passing of one of the most distinguished statesmen ever to have been produced. Dr. Manmohan Singh, at 92, is no more; age-related health complications stood as the reason behind AIIMS in Delhi confirming the event. A stalwart in Indian politics and a trailblazer in economic reform, the passing away of Dr. Singh represents the end of an era.
The 92-year-old former prime minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, passed away from a sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26 December 2024, according to an official communique from AIIMS, which added that though advanced resuscitative efforts followed with immediate medical intervention when he reached AIIMS at 8:06 PM, his efforts couldn’t be revived, and he was pronounced dead at 9:51 PM.
He was the helmsman of Indian governance for nearly two decades, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance between 2004 and 2014. The epoch of his tenure branded the governance of India as full of economic pragmatism mixed with social upliftment.
Surviving him is his wife, Gurcharan Kaur, and the three daughters.
Tributes Flood Social Media Platforms from Different Areas of the Country
PM Narendra Modi posted a condolence note on X while reminiscing on the towering legacy of Dr. Singh. “India mourns the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh one of its most revered leaders. From humble beginnings, he rose to become a respected economist around the world and was a transformational figure in India’s governance. His impact from Finance Minister to Prime Minister was always felt in India’s economic landscape. His words in Parliament were always enlightening; his humility and wisdom stood out while we interacted when I was Chief Minister of Gujarat and he was Prime Minister. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and countless admirers. Om Shanti.”
Congress leaders, Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra rushed to AIIMS immediately, which proves they have a very profound personal and political bond to this late leader.
India’s Architect of Economic Resurrection
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy is forever cemented by the watershed 1991 economic reforms through which he led as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. Such was the state of India teetering on the brink when the policies ushered into liberalization, deregulation, and globalization, paving the course for India to become an economic tiger. These reforms are acknowledged to have changed the economics of the nation.
Congress Leaders Pay Tributes
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and the senior leader Rahul Gandhi, who were attending the Congress Working Committee meeting in Karnataka’s Belagavi, rushed back to Delhi on the news of Dr. Singh’s death. His very prompt return tells one a lot about his regard and admiration both within and outside the party.
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy is assured-not just in policies promoted but in the sense of integrity and intellectual rigor, he brought to public service. It is a nation that, even as it celebrates life, mourns over one of its leaders who helped frame modern India.
