Whether you call her Mohini, the Dhak Dhak girl, Nisha, or Chandramukhi, Madhuri Dixit has left an unforgettable mark on every role she’s played. Now at 58, her name remains inseparable from the golden era of the 90s. Madhuri was the heartthrob of a generation, thanks to her box office hits, famous dance sequences, and spectacular performances.
But while her professional career sparkled with success, her personal life often made headlines too — from rumoured romances to industry controversies. On her 58th birthday, here’s a deep dive into some little-known stories about her love life, career choices, and the challenges she faced behind the glamour.
The Anil Kapoor Chapter: On-Screen Chemistry, Off-Screen Rumors
Madhuri and Anil Kapoor were one of Bollywood’s most adored pairs. Their chemistry in films like Ram Lakhan, Parinda, and Beta was undeniable, sparking rumours of a romantic link. However, things escalated when Anil Kapoor’s wife reportedly visited the film set with their children. Witnessing this, Madhuri decided to distance herself and chose not to work with Anil Kapoor for a long time. They eventually reunited in Pukar and later in Total Dhamaal (2019).
The Sanjay Dutt Affair & The No-Pregnancy Clause
Her relationship with Sanjay Dutt bloomed during the production of Saajan (1991), a smash blockbuster. They reunited again in Khalnayak (1993), but she starred opposite Jackie Shroff.
During this time, director Subhash Ghai made Madhuri sign a “No Pregnancy Clause” — a first of its kind in Bollywood. Concerned that marriage or pregnancy might delay the film’s schedule, he added a penalty clause requiring Madhuri to pay a large fine if she became pregnant while filming.
A Brief Link with Cricketer Ajay Jadeja
It wasn’t just film stars that Madhuri was linked to. Her name was also associated with cricketer Ajay Jadeja after a commercial shoot. Rumors of a connection circulated swiftly, but after Jadeja was implicated in a match-fixing controversy in 1999, Madhuri’s family reportedly objected, and the supposed relationship terminated.
Pregnant During Devdas, Yet She Delivered a Masterpiece
In Devdas (2002), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Madhuri played Chandramukhi while being pregnant in real life. She even recorded the intricate song “Humpe Yeh Kisne Hara Rang Dala” while pregnant. She appeared at the film’s screening with her husband, Dr. Shriram Nene, now a well-known cardiovascular surgeon.
Suresh Wadkar rejected me because I was “too thin.”
Madhuri’s father was keen to see her married early. Suresh Wadkar, a well-known vocalist, was among the hopefuls. However, he reportedly rejected the proposal, saying Madhuri was “too thin.” Ironically, Wadkar was 11 years older than her.
When Aamir Khan Spat on Her Hand (As a Prank)
Known for his on-set pranks, Aamir Khan once joked about being able to read palms. During the shooting of Dil, Madhuri approached him playfully to tell him her fortune. Instead, Aamir cheekily spat on her palm. Shocked and annoyed, Madhuri picked up a hockey stick and chased him around the set — all in good humor, of course.
Madhuri’s Early Life: Dance, Dreams, and Determination
Madhuri’s artistic journey began early. At just three, she expressed a desire to learn dance. Her father enrolled her in Kathak classes, and by eight, she gave her first public performance on Guru Purnima. The next day, a local newspaper praised the young prodigy, even printing her photograph. She later earned a scholarship in Kathak and developed a deep love for performance.
Though a bright student aspiring to be a doctor, fate had other plans. Rajshri Productions approached her during her school years with a role in Abodh. Her family initially refused but eventually agreed after persuasion. Thus began her film journey.
A Rocky Start: 5 Flops Before the First Hit
Madhuri debuted with Abodh, which failed at the box office despite her promising performance. Several subsequent films like Swati, Manav Hatya, and Hifazat also didn’t fare well. Her breakthrough came in 1988 with Dayavan, in which she costarred with Vinod Khanna.
The Controversial Kiss with Vinod Khanna in Dayavan
In Dayavan, Madhuri played Vinod Khanna’s wife. The film featured intimate scenes, including a lip-lock that later became controversial. During filming, Khanna allegedly continued kissing Madhuri even after the director yelled “cut,” reportedly leaving her in tears. He later apologized. Madhuri had requested director Feroz Khan to remove the scene, but it remained, reportedly due to financial commitments.
In an interview, Madhuri admitted she wasn’t aware of the intensity of the scene and later felt she should have declined it. She said, “I didn’t know how to say no at the time — I was too new and scared.”
