Kamini Kaushal, the oldest actress in Hindi cinema, has passed away. She was Dilip Kumar’s first girlfriend and had to marry her brother-in-law after her sister’s death.
At the age of 97, renowned Hindi film actress Kamini Kaushal departed from this life today. One of the earliest actresses in Hindi cinema was Kamini Kaushal. She was last seen in the Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer Laal Singh Chaddha. She will also play Shahid Kapoor’s grandmother in the 2023 film Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani.

Kamini Kaushal was born in Lahore on January 16, 1927. Her father, Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap, was a professor of botany at Punjab University, Lahore. He is also known as the father of bryology in India. He discovered six new plant species. Kamini was the youngest of two brothers and three sisters.
Kamini’s father passed away when she was seven years old.
At a young age, Kamini Kaushal began programming for All India Radio, earning a monthly salary of 10 rupees. She also earned a BA (Hons) in English Literature from Government College, Lahore. Meanwhile, in 1946, Chetan Anand offered her a role in his film Neecha Nagar, marking the beginning of her film career.
In her seven-decade film career, Kamini Kaushal has appeared in films such as Do Bhai, Shaheed, Nadiya Ke Paar, Ziddi, Shabnam, Paras, Upkaar, Purab Aur Paschim, Roti, Kapda Aur Makaan. As she grew older, she also appeared in films like Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Chori Chori, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Chennai Express, Kabir Singh, and Laal Singh Chaddha.

Kamini Kaushal married B.S. Sood in 1948. B.S. Sood was Kamini Kaushal’s elder sister’s husband. They had two children. In 1948, her sister died in a road accident, after which Kamini Kaushal was married to her sister’s husband to raise her children.
Kamini Kaushal was Dilip Kumar’s first girlfriend.
Kamini Kaushal appeared opposite Dilip Kumar in the 1948 film Shaheed. Despite being married, Kamini Kaushal fell in love with Dilip Kumar during the filming of this film. Dilip Kumar also wanted to marry her, but due to her brother’s opposition and the family’s displeasure, Kamini had to end the relationship.
Kamini said, “We were both shattered.” In a 2014 interview with a glamour magazine, Kamini said, “He (Dilip Sahib) wrote in his biography that he was shattered after separating from me. But the reality is that we were both shattered. We were very happy with each other. But what could I do? I couldn’t betray anyone (my husband) by saying, ‘Enough is enough, I’m leaving.’ How could I face my late sister? My husband is a very good person. He understood why this happened. Anyone can fall in love.”
When Dilip Kumar couldn’t recognize Kamini
After years, Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal met again in 2013 at the fourth death anniversary of the late actor Pran. Dilip Sahab arrived there with his wife, Saira. During this time, Dilip Sahab’s chair was placed right next to Kamini Kaushal’s. Dilip Sahab was 90 years old at the time, and Kamini was 86. But Dilip Sahab failed to recognize Kamini.
“It broke my heart when Dilip Sahab gave me a blank look,” Kamini stated in a 2014 interview. In fact, by that time, he was having trouble recognizing anyone. I was very saddened by this, and I walked away from there.”
