New Delhi: Justice Yashwant Varma has strongly refuted allegations of burnt cash being found at his residence, asserting that neither he nor his family had placed any money in the storeroom where a fire broke out. In a six-page clarification to Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Upadhyaya, Justice Varma stated that his staff present on the night of the incident did not witness any currency at the site.
Justice Varma emphasized that the storeroom was separate from his main residence, left unlocked, and accessible to many. He criticized media outlets for spreading misinformation without proper verification and condemned the insinuations linking him to the alleged cash.
“I unequivocally state that no cash was ever placed in that storeroom by me or any of my family members. I strongly denounce the baseless claims suggesting otherwise,” Justice Varma’s statement read. His response is part of an official document uploaded on the Supreme Court portal.
Following a preliminary probe by Chief Justice Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has set up a three-member panel to investigate the allegations. If the committee finds merit in the claims, CJI Khanna may seek Justice Varma’s resignation. Should he refuse, the matter could be escalated to Parliament for potential impeachment proceedings.
Justice Varma’s response also referenced a report from the Chief Justice’s secretary, who inspected the site on March 15 and did not find any cash at the scene. According to Justice Varma, the storeroom has remained untouched under judicial instructions, and any debris removed is still stored within the premises.
Addressing widely circulated images and videos of burnt cash, Justice Varma stated that he first saw them on March 17 when he met Chief Justice Upadhyaya after returning from Lucknow. He expressed concerns about a possible conspiracy behind the incident.
He also recalled past incidents, including unfounded allegations against him in a cheating case circulated on social media in December last year. Justice Varma maintained that all his family’s financial transactions were conducted through proper banking channels, including UPI and card payments.
Reaffirming his stance, he stated, “No one from my household ever reported seeing any burnt currency in the room.” He further pointed out that Delhi Fire Service officials had denied recovering any cash from the site.
Justice Varma concluded by urging authorities to ensure a fair inquiry into the matter, reiterating his confidence that no currency was ever in the storeroom and dismissing all allegations against him and his family as baseless.
