Thala for a reason: Fans hail MS Dhoni’s presence:
The Indian team secured a place in the final with a thrilling 7-run victory over England in the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final.
Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was also present to watch the match.
Following the victory, his fans once again brought “Thala for a Reason” back into trend.
New Delhi: Defending champions India registered a thrilling seven-run victory over England in the T20 World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Despite Jacob Bethell’s brilliant batting, India secured a place in the final, where they will face New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
While the match was a thrilling affair on the field, there was another reason for the spectators to rejoice: Former Indian captain MS Dhoni was present at the stadium. With the team’s victory, the viral phrase “Thala for a Reason” once again became a topic of discussion on social media.
This phrase has become a popular meme among cricket fans, linked to Dhoni’s jersey number seven and his identity as “Thala,” meaning leader, among Chennai Super Kings supporters. As soon as India defeated England in a close contest, social media was flooded with posts attributing the victory to Dhoni’s presence. Many users repeatedly repeated the phrase “Thala for a reason,” which trended overnight.
How Dhoni took credit for the victory
Whether it was coincidence or something else, the number 7 was everywhere in the Indian team’s semi-final victory against England. Team India scored 253 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. England’s team could only reach 246 runs for the loss of 7 wickets.
India won by 7 runs. Sanju Samson, who top-scored for India in this match, hit 7 sixes. Interestingly, Jacob Bethell, who scored a century for England, also hit 7 sixes.
Over the past few years, several memes have gone viral featuring Dhoni’s jersey number and this phrase, which often appears whenever the number seven appears in cricket or other contexts.
Dhoni himself addressed the trend in a 2024 video, admitting that he was aware of it but didn’t fully understand the reason behind it.
“I know, but I don’t know the reason behind it. I don’t know if it’s a joke, meant to tease me, just for fun, or a meme. But whatever it is, I think my fans have turned it into something positive for me. That’s how I feel,” Dhoni said.
