Birth of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born on February 19, 1630, at Shivneri Fort. His father, Shahaji Bhosale, was a general of Bijapur. Mother Jijabai taught him religion, morality, and war skills from childhood. It is said that Jijabai inspired him to become a great warrior by telling him stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
The first victory of Torna Fort
Shivaji Maharaj captured the Torna Fort of Bijapur at the age of 16. This was his first victory, which proved his bravery and foresight. Following this, he captured other forts and established the Maratha Empire.
The Sultan of Bijapur sent a cruel general named Afzal Khan to defeat Shivaji Maharaj. He planned to kill Shivaji by deceit and called him to meet. But Shivaji Maharaj had already sensed this trick. When Afzal Khan tried to attack Shivaji on the pretext of hugging him, he killed him with his nail-like weapon.
Captured by deceit
Aurangzeb called Shivaji Maharaj to Agra and captured him by deceit. He was kept under tight guard in the Agra Fort. But Shivaji saved himself with intelligence and cunning. He pretended to be sick and planned to escape by hiding himself in his food baskets. Through this clever plan, he successfully escaped from Agra Fort and returned to Maharashtra.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj realized the concept of Swarajya and established an independent Maratha Empire while fighting the Mughals, Adilshah, and the Portuguese. He was crowned in a grand ceremony at Raigad Fort on 6 June 1674. He officially became “Chhatrapati” and named his rule Hindavi Swaraj.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj established India’s first great navy. He built strong ships to fight the Portuguese, British, and Dutch forces in the Arabian Sea. Hence, he is also known as the “Father of the Indian Navy”.
Shivaji Maharaj always respected women and ordered his soldiers to protect the honor of women. He reformed the tax system to protect farmers. He did not discriminate against any religion and respected all religions.
