The Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on June 24, 2024, urging the central government to officially change the state’s name to Keralam.
The Union Cabinet has now approved this name, making Kerala’s name ‘Keralaam’.
A historic decision was taken at the first meeting of the Union Cabinet held on Tuesday at the newly constructed PMO building ‘Seva Tirtha’ in New Delhi.
The Modi Cabinet has approved the proposal to officially change the name of the state of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced that the Union Cabinet approved the change of name of the state from “Kerala” to “Keralaam” on Tuesday (February 24, 2026). On June 24, 2024, the Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to change the state’s name to “Keralaam.”
It should be noted that Kerala Assembly elections are expected to be held in April-May. The government has taken this step ahead of this. On June 24, 2024, the Kerala Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to officially change the state’s name to Keralam.
The CM introduced the resolution in 2024.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan introduced this resolution in 2024. He stated that the state is called “Kerala” in the state’s local language, Malayalam. Therefore, the same name should be used in all languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. On June 25, 2024, the Assembly passed this resolution for the second time because the Home Ministry suggested some technical amendments to the first proposal. The Chief Minister stated that the demand for uniting the Malayalam indigenous regions to form “Kerala” has been a growing demand since the independence movement.
Earlier this year, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Kerala state president, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that the state’s official name be changed from “Kerala” to “Keralalam.”
He stated that the name “Keralalam” is deeply connected to the Malayalam language and the state’s cultural identity.
Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated that the bill to change Kerala’s name will now be sent to the state assembly for approval. He stated that the first cabinet meeting held in the new Prime Minister’s Office building passed a resolution to take all decisions in the best interests of 1.4 billion people. This was the first cabinet meeting held in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new office complex, Seva Tirtha.
The previous meeting, on February 13th, was held in the Prime Minister’s Office in South Block. The proposal has been approved. After the constitutional amendment process, the state’s official name will become “Keralaam.”
