On August 11, the Supreme Court ordered the removal of all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR. This decision has sparked objections from several Bollywood celebrities, including Anupamaa actress Rupali Ganguly. However, after she voiced her support for stray dogs, Rupali faced accusations of eating beef—claims she has now strongly denied.
Rupali had earlier shared a post stating:
“In our culture, dogs protect the temple of Bhairav Baba and are fed on Amavasya for blessings. They grow up on the streets, protect shops, wait outside our doors, and chase away thieves by barking. If we remove them now, then in moments of real danger—like raising an alarm—we risk losing our safety. Sending them to far-off shelters is not an act of mercy, but an exile.”
In response to her post, a social media user wrote:
“When you eat chicken, mutton, beef, fish, etc., you cannot advocate for stray dogs. Love for animals should apply to all animals. You cannot support strays if you have high-breed dogs in your home.. And for those speaking up for stray dogs—go to shelter homes daily, feed them, take care of them, or live there yourself. Raise money and build a shelter home, adopt 10 strays, and encourage others to do the same. See how many unprovoked dog bites occur every day, meet families who have lost loved ones to rabies, and keep up with the news. Or wait until your family members get rabies—then you won’t bark.”
Rupali responded firmly:
“I feed homeless animals daily. I vaccinate and sterilize every animal I feed regularly. I support animal shelters and cow shelters, not only in my city but across India. I’m proud to be a vegetarian and to support homeless fur babies. I do not have a single high-breed animal at home—only four Indian-breed pets. My child has grown up with so-called stray animals since birth, and even those unfamiliar with him have protected him. Animals understand love and kindness far better than humans do. This earth belongs to everyone.”
This social media debate comes in the wake of the Supreme Court’s directive to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR within eight weeks, relocate them to shelter homes, and ensure they are sterilized.
