Rupali Ganguly Responds to the Comparison of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi by Smriti Irani and Anupamaa: “It’s not rivalry; it’s nostalgia.”
Social media discussions over Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’s spectacular return, spearheaded by Smriti Irani, have rekindled parallels to Star Plus’ current TRP leader, Anupamaa, which stars Rupali Ganguly. Rupali has finally spoken up, though, and her response is elegant.
Rupali Ganguly Speaks Out
In an interview with TellyChakkar, Rupali addressed the buzz and dismissed the so-called “rivalry” between the two iconic shows. She called Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi a symbol of pure nostalgia and said she was proud to have the show returning to their network.
“I don’t understand why there are comparisons between Anupamaa and Kyunki. That show is a legacy, and all of us should celebrate its return,” Rupali shared. She emphasized that instead of pitting two powerful women-led shows against each other, viewers should appreciate the variety and evolution of Indian television.
Ekta Kapoor Also Responds
The debate first flared up when producer Ekta Kapoor responded to an Instagram post that hinted at a rivalry between the shows. Ekta supported Rupali and the Anupamaa team in an interview with Brut India. “In her own right, she [Rupali] is a celebrity. Anupamaa has achieved what no show has done in recent years,” said Ekta, praising the show’s creator Rajan Shahi. She also called out the constant habit of comparing women and said such discussions are unproductive.
“It’s always women being pitted against women, and frankly, it’s unnecessary,” she added.
Kyunki Saas Returns With a Nostalgic Punch
On July 29, the latest season of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi debuted, transporting viewers back in time. Smriti Irani’s return as Tulsi Virani, performing the iconic aarti outside the Virani house, brought back strong emotions and a wave of 2000s nostalgia. Alongside familiar vibes, the reboot also introduces fresh characters like Ritik (Aman Gandhi), Angad (Rohit Suchanti), and Paridhi (Shagun Sharma).
Celebrating Both Eras of Indian TV
At its core, this moment isn’t about competition—it’s a celebration of how far Indian television has come. While Anupamaa continues to lead with emotionally powerful storytelling, Kyunki returns to give old fans something to cheer for once again. Both shows reflect strong women, strong narratives, and strong emotions—something worth applauding, not comparing.
