Popular actress Rashmika Mandanna has found herself in the middle of controversy after a statement she made in an interview with journalist Barkha Dutt. She was the first member of the Coorg (Kodava) community to work in the film industry, according to Rashmika. The comment didn’t go down well with many from the Kodava community, including some senior actors who’ve been part of the industry for decades.
What Exactly Did Rashmika Say?
Speaking about her early career, Rashmika said:
“When I received my first cheque, it wasn’t easy to talk about it at home. I think I was the first member of the Coorg community to enter films at that time. I encountered a lot of criticism.
This remark triggered a backlash, especially since it ignored several well-known names from the Kodava community who had already made their mark in cinema, even before Rashmika stepped into the limelight.
Actors From Coorg React
Veteran South actress Prema, who gained massive popularity in the 90s, expressed disappointment. She said:
“What can I say? Our community knows the truth. Shashikala was in supporting roles before me. Many Kodavas joined the film industry after me. Rashmika should be asked about this directly.”
Actress Nidhi Subbaiah, who has acted in both Bollywood and Kannada cinema, responded with maturity. She said:
“It’s not something to fight over. I hope Rashmika continues to succeed in her job. However, Prema was our community’s true star. Why Rashmika said it is beyond me.
On the other hand, actress Harshika Poonacha chose to support Rashmika and asked people not to overreact.
“Maybe it was just a slip of the tongue. But claiming to be the first actress from our community is not correct. Even actor Gulshan Devaiah has been part of Bollywood for years now.”
About the Coorg (Kodava) Community
The Kodava community, originally from the Coorg region of Karnataka, is known for its rich traditions, unique culture, and deep connection to nature. The Kodavas speak Kodava Thakk and have a strong presence in Indian history, especially in the fields of defense and sports — and yes, even cinema.
While Rashmika Mandanna’s statement might not have been meant to offend, it has certainly sparked an important conversation about representation, respect for one’s roots, and acknowledging those who paved the way.
