Highlights from the conversation with Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor..
Question – We all have heard of love, but what is ‘loveyaapa’?
Answer – According to me, the obstacles that come with love or the mess that we often create ourselves. Our film ‘Loveyaapa’ is about that.
Question – Have you both ever spread ‘loveyaapa’ with your partner?
Answer- No. We are very good kids. We are very boring people. Times have changed now. In the 90s, it used to happen or it was shown in films that the father is the villain. But in today’s time, we create problems in relationships.
Question- What was the reaction when the script of ‘Loveyaapa’ was narrated? Also, what did you find so special that both of you agreed to it?
Answer- I had already seen the original film, so I was very excited. I laughed a lot after the narration and the dialogues are very well written. I am very different from Bani’s character, so I thought it would be challenging for me. Bani and Gucci’s relationship is very special. Both fight a lot but there is a lot of love between them.
The film’s producer Madhu Ji came to me and said that I have the rights to the Tamil film ‘Love Today’, so I want you to watch it. I will tell you the story in one line the boy wants to marry the girl. In such a situation, the girl’s father put a condition that both of you will have to change your phones for one day. If you still want to get married after that, then do it. I got excited after hearing that one line. Then I saw the film and I liked it very much. I told Madhu sir that sir I liked the film very much but are you sure that I should do this film? If I were in your place, I would not have brought this film to me. Madhu had confidence in me, he said yes I am sure.
Question- The character of both of you is opposite to your real-life personality. What was the preparation to mold yourself into the character?
Answer- We did reading for five weeks. We did a lot of rehearsals and a lot of workshops. After doing this, we became very comfortable. We did not have to do much to mold the character.
The specialty of Advait (director) Ji is that he brings out amazing performances from any actor. We met for the first time in Phantom’s office. When they were talking about the script, we both kept our heads down and were just replying yes sir, ok sir. At that time Advait was nervous after hearing our reply about how both of us will work for this role.
Question- You both are very serious and your character is loud. What was the impression when you met each other for the first time?
Answer- When we met for the first time, my entire focus was on Advait and the script. I believe that if the producer or director is doing the casting, then he must be doing it after thinking about it and must be doing a good casting.
Question- But then how did the conversation start between the two?
Answer- The conversation between us started during the rehearsal.
Question- Even then both of you were serious?
Answer- Even then we were serious but spent six weeks together. We used to come every day and do reading rehearsals.
Question- The first film of both of you was of a different genre. So how much did the experience of the first project help? What is the process of getting into the character?
Answer- Every film has a different process.
Every director has a different process. ‘Maharaj’ was a completely different film. I think the character of ‘Maharaj’ was close to my personality. On the sets of ‘Loveyaapa’, we learned a lot from the senior actor.
Question- I asked this question because Aamir gets very involved in his character.
Answer- Yes, he rehearses a lot. We both also rehearsed a lot. This process is fun. And any character is created only in rehearsals.
Question- Do you remember the first day on the set? How was it?
Answer- On the first day, we did a test shoot, which happened a month before the shoot. I had a bike riding sequence and Khushi had a long drive scene. Then both of us went to Mira Road.
Question- Finally we will see you riding a bike in the film, otherwise you are seen like this only in autos.
Answer- You know I have learned to ride a bike for this film. Before this, I have only driven a scooter.
Question- Junaid, are you not afraid that ‘Maharaj’ has already been released? The second film is about to be released. Will people recognize you or surround you?
Answer- People recognize Khushi Ki Gaadi. I take a rickshaw every day. And till that, only one rickshaw puller has recognized me. In a city like Bombay, everyone is focused and busy with work.
Question- What was the most beautiful thing on the set that is still in your mind?
Answer- Our film crew was very young and enthusiastic. Everyone on the set was high-energy and positive. It was a first-time DOP and production designer, so everyone was working with high energy. Phantom is making a film after a long time, so the whole atmosphere was amazing.
Question- There are a lot of fun parts in this film, so many funny things must have happened on the set. Any such thing that you remember?
Answer- You know a lot of funny things have happened. Both of us were the funniest.
