Coldplay in Mumbai: A Spectacle of High Notes, Mixed Reactions, and Soaring Ticket Prices

Coldplay in Mumbai A Spectacle of High Notes, Mixed Reactions, and Soaring Ticket Prices

The celebrated return of Coldplay to Indian shores after nearly a decade unfolded at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, an event marked by soaring anticipation yet tempered by a divided response from concertgoers. Despite Chris Martin’s tireless showmanship, the audience’s subdued enthusiasm left many spectators and online commentators underwhelmed.

Clips of the band’s performance, particularly their iconic anthem Hymn for the Weekend, quickly circulated across social media platforms. However, the lack of vibrant participation from the crowd stood out starkly. Observers likened the ambiance to a library, with comments like “colder than a cold play” underscoring the perceived apathy.

Critics attributed this tepid atmosphere to the steep ticket prices, which allegedly alienated ardent fans in favor of influencers and social media enthusiasts more preoccupied with crafting Instagram reels than savoring the music. “It’s a crowd full of people who know the camera angles better than the lyrics,” quipped one netizen. Others expressed astonishment that an audience in Mumbai—a city featured in the Hymn for the Weekend music video—seemed disconnected from the track. “How do you not know this song? It’s practically a Mumbai anthem!” exclaimed a bewildered fan.

Nahh man… WHAT IS THIS???? The crowd is quieter than a fxcking library… L!#Coldplay pic.twitter.com/F4AnvrIXaK

Amidst the uneven energy, Chris Martin infused the event with heartfelt moments. He paused to acknowledge cricketer Jasprit Bumrah, humorously quipping, “He needs to bowl,” and won over the crowd by echoing Jai Shri Ram after noticing a fan’s placard. In an impromptu twist, Martin even brought a fan on stage to share the spotlight in a duet, offering a rare intimate moment during the grand spectacle.

Despite the buzz surrounding the event, accessibility concerns loomed large, as resale tickets soared to an eye-watering ₹1.5 lakh. This sparked widespread debates about the affordability and inclusivity of the experience for genuine music aficionados.

The Mumbai chapter of Coldplay’s tour will conclude with two additional performances at DY Patil Stadium on January 19 and 21. Following these shows, the band will journey to Ahmedabad, where they will grace the Narendra Modi Stadium for two consecutive performances on January 25 and 26.
