IIT WALE BABA is going viral in Maha Kumbh, but today we are introducing you to a person who chose to protect nature instead of becoming a Baba after leaving his IIT career.
IIT WALE BABA Abhay Singh is becoming quite viral in the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Today we are introducing you to a person who dedicated his entire life to protecting the forests, rivers, and tribals of MP. After doing IIT 45 years ago, he left his career and set out to protect nature. This is the story of Rahul Banerjee…
Rahul Banerjee studied at IIT in 1980. While studying at IIT Kharagpur, he used to go to villages for service work. During this time he felt that the condition of tribals and villagers was very bad and there was no one to raise voices for their rights. He was leaving IIT in the fourth year but under pressure from his family, he completed his degree. After this, he started doing social work in tribal areas. He worked for a long time in Jhabua Alirajpur and started agitations to raise the voices of tribals. In 2005, the Tribal Forest Rights Act was passed in the country in which Rahul Banerjee played a leading role. After this law, tribals got legal rights over the forest and their farms. They also got the right to save the entire forest. Rahul says that because of this law, we were able to save 15 thousand hectares of forest in Alirajpur.
Efforts to keep ancient methods alive, a hostel built for tribal children
Rahul is currently working in Jhabua Alirajpur. He says that all the families of tribal areas do Shramdaan in a small locality. They work in someone else’s field for a day. This creates social concern. Rahul is working to keep these ancient methods alive. Along with this, he has an ashram where children are made proficient in education, values agriculture, etc.
Governments are turning farmers into laborers by destroying agriculture and forests. On the question of why tribal movements are increasing, Rahul says that where tribals live, there are rivers, forests, and minerals. Industries want all these things. They want to snatch them. Now the government will extract coal by cutting the dense forests of Hansdev. This will cause a lot of carbon emissions. Today the world has abandoned these policies but we are not improving. Villages are becoming empty and people are leaving agriculture and becoming cheap laborers.
The world will return to organic farming
Rahul Banerjee is now working on organic farming. He says that we are earning money and consuming poison. We built factories and buildings by destroying agriculture and now we are not even getting good food to eat. He does organic farming and works for its promotion.
He met Subhadra in the tribal movement and made her his life partner
After their studies, Rahul became dedicated to tribal movements, during this time he met Subhadra. She is a tribal and works for the upliftment of tribals. At that time she was working in Dhar and the Narmada movement was going on. They met there, worked together in many movements, and then became life partners. Now both are working on organic farming.
