This heart-touching incident was shared by Balasubramaniam himself. SP Balasubramaniam, while telling an interesting anecdote related to Rafi Sahab in a program, said that when he was studying in an engineering college and had not even started his career in singing, he used to go to college by bicycle every day. There was a tea stall on the way, where old songs used to play on the radio. During this time, a special song by Rafi Sahab used to play at least three days a week. However, at that time Balasubramaniam did not know which film this song was from nor that Rafi Sahab had sung this song.
He used to cry after listening to the song
He would stop the cycle and stand on hearing the song and tears would flow from his eyes while listening to it. This continued for six months. One day, the tea seller asked him, “You come to listen to this song every day and cry every time. Why so?” Answering this question, Balasubramaniam said, “I don’t know why I do this.” This song was the famous song ‘Deewana Hua Badal’ from the film Kashmir Ki Kali.

After some time, SP Balasubramaniam was passing through the same route in his car. Then while passing by the tea seller’s shop, he stopped and told the shopkeeper, “I am the same person who used to come every day by bicycle and cry after listening to songs. Now I know why I used to cry.” He further said, “I used to listen to humans singing, but when Rafi sahab sang, I used to feel that I was listening to God singing.”
