Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, was placed under arrest on Wednesday evening following the entry of a 12-person Enforcement Directorate team into the city using a search warrant about the Delhi liquor policy case.
Now, for the first time, the investigating team is questioning the CM. Following the suspicions, the AAP announced that Mr. Kejriwal would remain in jail and perform his duties as Chief Minister. “Arvind Kejriwal is the Chief Minister of Delhi and he will be… there are no two ways about it,” AAP chief Atishi said.
The party has called protests across the country over the arrest. AAP leaders plan to demonstrate in front of the Delhi BJP headquarters, which has increased security and implemented Section 144. To put an end to any protests, paramilitary soldiers dressed in riot gear have been called in. All routes that go to the Delhi office of the AAP are blocked.
In the annals of Independent India, this is the first arrest of a serving chief minister. The investigation team has previously detained Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, two prominent figures in Mr. Kejriwal’s AAP party. The investigation agency issued nine summonses to the chief minister, who consistently declined to appear before it and claimed the summons was unlawful.
