Campaigning on behalf of Rajashree Patil, the leader of the Eknath Shinde-led side, was Nitin Gadkari, who participated in the first phase of the Lok Sabha election from Nagpur.

Mumbai: On Tuesday afternoon, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari passed out while speaking at an electoral rally in Yavatmal, Maharashtra. Thankfully, the senior BJP leader received immediate medical attention and was able to return to the stage and finish his address after a little hiatus.

Soon after ending his address, Mr. Gadkari made a post on X.

“The heat at the rally in Pusad, Maharashtra, bothered me. However, I am fully well today, and I’m heading to Varud to attend the upcoming meeting. I appreciate your affection and well wishes.

Unsettling footage from the event, which was regrettably broadcast live on X (previously Twitter) and by his own account as well, showed Nitin Gadkari being carried away by those present. Many of them hurried to surround the BJP leader with a shield to provide him and those tending to him with some privacy.

Many of them hurried to surround the BJP leader with a shield to provide him and those tending to him with some privacy.

Mr. Gadkari, who ran in the first round of the Lok Sabha election as the candidate from Nagpur, a seat he won in 2014 and 2019, was supporting Rajashree Patil, the ruling Mahayuti alliance’s choice for Yavatmal-Washim and a member of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s faction of the Shiv Sena.

Earlier this year, as the BJP postponed announcing Mr. Gadkari as its Nagpur Lok Sabha candidate, there was conjecture on the politician’s future. Due to this delay, Uddhav Thackeray, the previous chief minister, even sent Mr. Gadkari a mocking “join us” invitation.

“I am restating what I told Gadkari two days ago. Join the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), an alliance of the Congress party and the erstwhile united Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party, led by Mr. Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, if you are being abused.

“We’ll make sure you win. When our administration takes office, we’ll appoint you as a minister, and that will be a position with authority, Uddhav Thackeray said.

It appears that the BJP listened and took action. Mr. Gadkari was mentioned in the party list a few days later.

Mr. Gadkari had before referred to Mr. Thackeray’s offer as “ridiculous” and “immature”. Speaking in Yavatmal, he added that his adversary did not need to worry about him because the BJP has a structure in place for poll tickets.

The BJP, the Sena under Shinde, and the Nationalist Congress Party breakaway section under Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar make up the Mahayuti alliance. Before the deadline for submitting nominations for the election’s fifth round, the three are frantically trying to come to an agreement on a seat-sharing arrangement.

In the tug-of-war between the BJP and its two state allies, six seats are yet to be assigned. The well-known seats in Nashik, Thane, and Mumbai South make up three of these six. According to reports, the Sena group is optimistic about Mumbai South and is interested in Nashik and Thane.

Eight seats in the eastern region of Maharashtra, including Amravati, Hingoli, Nanded, and Yavatmal-Washim, will cast ballots in the second round of voting, which takes place on April 26.
